Road trip through Arizona

Come summertime, Arizona’s dry heat can be too much to handle without sheltering in an air-conditioned building until the sun drops below the horizon. But during the spring time, Arizona’s warm weather creates a nice, comfortable climate that makes it fun to explore all the state has to offer. Consider visiting Sedona, a city located in the Arizona’s high desert. Known as “Red Rock Country,” the city is surrounded by over a million acres of national forest, with stunning scenery that is covered with multi-colored stone formations. This is the perfect launchpad for recreational activities, with hiking, biking, jeep tracks, and more all within reach. Sedona is also known to many for its spiritual vortexes, which have been said to leave visitors feeling inspired and recharged after visiting Sedona.

No stop to Arizona would be complete without seeing the Grand Canyon. It is known as the Grand Canyon State, after all. Spring is probably the best time to visit Grand Canyon National Park, when you’ll enjoy nice temperatures and low crowds. Accommodation is also easier to find during this time. To visit the Grand Canyon, your best bet is to plan a trip to the South Rim. The North Rim is closed for the winter, with its 2019 season opening scheduled for May 15.

Explore Northern California

Everyone knows about the classic California road trip down Route 1 and the Pacific Coast Highway, and it's well-known for a reason. Driving along the oceanside cliffs around Big Sur and exploring the various beaches and small towns are a bucket list must have. If you're looking for something else, there’s so much more to explore in the Golden State. Lake Tahoe is paradise for outdoor enthusiasts, and spring is the perfect time to take advantage of the sunny weather the shoulder season’s low crowds. There are several access points to the Pacific Crest Trail for those looking for hikes of varying levels of difficulty. Winter lovers can even ski though the spring season at the Spring Skiing Capital, Squaw Valley, until the end of May. If you’re hanging around North Lake Tahoe, visit Truckee, a quaint mountain town that’s northwest of the lake and just off Interstate 80. Walk around the historic downtown area of Truckee, which is situated close to the Truckee River and filled with interesting art galleries, shops, and delicious restaurants.

Mountain bikers love hitting the trails in Downieville, a town just over one hundred miles northeast of the state’s capital. The town hosts an annual mountain bike race, Downieville Classic, every August, but the trails are great in the spring.

Charm yourself through Charleston, SC

Many believe that the best time to visit the charming town of Charleston is between the months of March and May. That’s because the weather is fresh, not weighed down by the heavy humidity that arrives in the summer.

Charleston has a thriving food scene, where many restaurants create Southern favorites with a focus on local ingredients sourced from local suppliers. Being a coastal town, there is plenty of seafood dishes to check taste, complemented by southern classics like grits. The food truck scene can’t be missed, either. The area has about 220 trucks, carts and trailers rotating around the city’s hottest food spots. From curried shrimp-and-grit fritters with chili bacon jam at Root Note Food to lots of Southern barbecue options, you can’t go wrong sampling a few items from the variety of trucks. Check out the Post and Courier’s guide to Charleston food trucks here.

Get your body moving after a large meal at any of the many surrounding parks. Wannamker North Trail, part of Charleston County Parks, offers thirteen miles of open trail for MTB, hikers, walkers and runners alike.

Another option is explore the channel islands surrounding the city. Cross the Ashley River to visit Folly Island, where you can soak in some beautiful beaches and historical landmarks at the same time. The Morris Island lighthouse is an offshore lighthouse from the Civil War era. The Folly Beach pier, is a great place to people watch, bird watch and even rent a pole to fish.
