Fast Charging for your iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X
How many times have you been plugged into your iPhone, anxiously alternating glances between the clock and the battery icon as your phone slowly recharges? Is it ready now?...five seconds later...Is it. Ready. Now? Fear not, now you can spend less time charging your phone and more time doing what you do.
With the recent releases of the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X, Apple also announced fast wired charging—the ability to charge a drained battery to 50% in just 30 minutes. In this article we’ll explain what you need to speed up your iPhone recharge with fast charge. And no, we are not talking about wireless charging pads, which still aren’t enabled for fast charging and will cost you around sixty bucks plus tax.
What’s included with your iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X
5W power adapter, Lightning to USB cable, EarPods with lightning connector, and lightning to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter (Sorry, Rokform case isn’t included!)
Unfortunately, neither of the accessories for fast charging are included with your new iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X purchase. If you haven’t already picked up your new phone and are wondering what IS included, here it is: In addition to the iPhone itself, the box comes with EarPods with Lightning Connector, Lightning to USB Cable, 5W USB Power Adapter, and a Lightning to 3.5mm Headphone Jack Adapter (in case you prefer to use regular earphones).
Must purchase accessories for fast charging
So, what do you need to charge up your iPhone quickly?
29W USB C Power Adapter
Compared to the 5W charging block (included with your phone) all iPhone users are familiar with, the 29W packs additional power to speed up the charging process. Note: A USB-C is different from the typical USB ports and adapters we’ve become accustomed to.
You can purchase the 29W USB-C Power Adapter from Apple or you can opt for a comparable third-party USB-C power adapter. This is the better option if you’re looking to find a lower price. If you choose to purchase a third-party adapter, make sure it supports USB Power Delivery (USB-PD). The cheapest, highly-rated USB-PD we found was only $24.99 for on Amazon. That’s half the price of the Apple’s 29W power adapter.
Apple also sells 61W or 87W USB-C Power Adapters that could charge your phone slightly faster even. When we looked at sources that put all three Apple power adapters to the test, it appears that the charge speed is only marginally faster, but at a much heftier price tag. For this reason, we recommend the 29W adapter.
$25.00 (1 meter); $35.00 (2 meters)
In addition to the upgraded power adapter, you’ll also need to buy a USB-C to Lightning Cable. This is NOT the same as the cable that is included with your new iPhone. You can purchase the standard cable size (1 meter) off of the Apple website for $25.00. If you prefer a longer cord, it is available for $35.00.
So there you have it. Unlike the fast wireless charging that Apple is promising eventually (no date has been shared with the public), fast wired charging is available now as an easy (and potentially cheaper) way to charge up your phone. Rokform engineers are working hard to craft another great product that will address battery charging so stay tuned! Until then, happy charging! ⚡️
