Matches, sunscreen and a flashlight are a few common items most of us have readily available around the house. These items are also essential to bring with you on your next outdoor trip. You would not only be saving money by using some of your own items but you’ll be prepared with the basic necessities whilst on the go.

We’ve gathered 10 items that are essential for your next outdoor trip while keeping in mind a savvy shopper budget.

Flashlight. If you’re looking for a flashlight that’ll last, stick with a hand-turbine version. Batteries aren’t always reliable in an emergency situation and with a hand crank option, you will always be ready to shine. Pun totally intended.

Rope. Need extra ties for your tent or catching dinner? Most outdoor articles recommend a military-brand 550-parachute cord for extreme durability. Having extra cord is highly recommended and you can purchase it at a reasonable price at your local outdoor retailer.

Compass. Just because you have that snazzy GPS system, doesn’t mean it will hold up (or have signal) in the wilderness. Always make sure you have a compass for flawless navigation. Basic compasses typically range from $10.00 to $15.00.

Map. We all know that Lewis and Clark can cross America without a map, but that doesn’t mean you should try to follow suit. Keep a map of the area you’ll be staying near with you at all times.

Matches. Assume that you’re not a master of rubbing two sticks together. Make sure to bring a few packs of matches in a waterproof container. You never know when you’ll need a source of light during your next camping trip.

Frying Pan. Did you catch the BIG fish? Be prepared to fry up your prize with a good old frying pan. This cooking element is a common item that many people tend to forget when packing. If you don’t already own one, pick up a small one for under $20!

First Aid Kit. Accidents can happen, so remember to be prepared. Someone might slip, fall, or get bitten (are you sure you want to go on an outdoor trip?). You can purchase a compact First Aid Kit at your local pharmacy for under $10.

BAM Magnetic Mount. Along with your Rugged Rokform Case, grab yourself a BAM for $19. It’s the ultimate magnetic add-on for any hard surface. Enjoy the simple comforts of technology right in your tent.

Weather Gear. While the forecast currently says “sunny skies ahead,” weather can change in an instant. Don’t forget to stock up on disposable ponchos, which usually range around $5. They also can double up as tarps or rain collectors.

Sunscreen. There is nothing worse than a bad sunburn on vacation. Along with wearing a hat outdoors, make sure you’re also sporting sunscreen. Load up on SPF 45 and apply often for maximum protection. See what we did there?
