5 Takeaways About The iPhone From The Apple Keynote Event

If you were following along on our Twitter during the Apple Keynote on Wednesday, you’d probably notice there was plenty that they announced in the short (but actually long) two-hour presentation. While it was cool to see Mario making his way to the App Store and the Apple Watch getting its “swim” on, we were on the edge of our seats for the anticipated launch of the iPhone 7. After it was all said and done, there were a few BIG takeaways that will make the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus stand out in the sea of smartphones. Here’s what we noticed the most:

#1 - Dust and Water Proof

Yes, there are already smartphones on the market that boast water and dust proof capability, so if that was something holding you back, this is a big deal. For many, this hasn’t been the end-all-be-all when it came to deciding on a phone, but this update will definitely make A LOT of people happy. Whether you’re the general contractor around a lot of dust, or the spontaneous pool diver at party (full clothes and all) this feature is a game changer. Now I don’t have to worry about my kid throwing the phone in the bathtub, making my heart stop every time she grabs it. Yay!

It also helps alleviate concerns about getting stuck in the rain while out on a bicycle or motorcycle ride with your phone attached to one of our popular bicycle or motorcycle mounts – you’re now protected from everything!

#2 – No More Analog Earbuds (and the intro of AirPods)

As many had predicted, there will be no more analog headphone jack – wired headphones will now plug in via the lightning port. Apple will be including a set of their traditional Earbuds with this new lighting port connection as well as an adaptor for the older analog headphone models. We’ll have to wait and see if the lightning connection is any different to the sound, good or bad, but as Apple referenced in their presentation, no one else seemed to take on the challenge of a new way of listening.

And while Bluetooth headphones aren’t anything new, Apple introduced its all-new AirPods earbuds that pretty much look like the bud of their former headphones but without the wire. It’s definitely getting mixed reactions around the Internet. The functionality is all there at a touch of a button with voice commands and more.

#3 – Oh That Camera

So if you’ve had a chance to look at the two phones, you’ll notice that they are very different when it comes to the rear camera. The iPhone 7 got some great updates, but it’s the iPhone 7 Plus that stands out with its dual camera capability. Featuring a wide angle (which is in the iPhone 7) and telephoto lens, this enables users to get up to 2x the optical zoom and has a far greater depth of field. With most of us not being professional photographers and not seeing the use of buying a separate camera, this will be a great selling point to have a high quality camera in your pocket.

#4 – New Black Finish

So the whole presentation started with a look at their new finishing process for the “jet black” color. It’s very sleek and (dare we say) beautiful, but if you happened to peruse the Apple site yesterday, it came with a very interesting disclaimer on the color. It reads: “The high-gloss finish of the Jet Black iPhone 7 is achieved through a precision nine-step anodization and polishing process. Its surface is equally as hard as other anodized Apple products; however, its high shine may show fine micro-abrasions with use. If you are concerned about this, we suggest you use one of the many cases available to protect your iPhone.”

So unless you are super gentle with your iPhone (and I’m not exactly sure who is), this screams, “GET A ROKFORM CASE ON THAT STAT.” Or was that just us? Either way, it’s cool they are providing more colors and taking risks. We’ll see if it pays off and how popular that color option becomes.

#5 – 2x Faster than iPhone 6

The new A10 microprocessor may not be the flashiest update that was presented but it’s definitely worth noting. This is the chip that makes the iPhone tick so it will be nice to know that the new device will be faster and snappier than its predecessors. According to Apple, 2x faster processing speeds and 3x faster graphic speeds than the iPhone 6. Those numbers might not mean much, but to the gamer (maybe our friend Gaming with MOLT or even iJustine would agree) or someone who frequently uses their phone for movie watching, this will be a welcomed update.

Is this the best iPhone yet? Of course. But did it make enough big changes to move the needle against the competition? We think so but time will definitely tell. One thing we do commend them for is their willingness to take risks and that’s what gets us excited.

If you are planning on buying the iPhone, especially that snazzy Jet Black color, take a look at the lineup that Rokform has created for this special device. Our new Crystal case has been redesigned for a slimmer feel. Check out all the cases for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus HERE.
