Apple Unveils the iPhones of 2020
Apple held its 2020 keynote a couple of days ago, and it was a memorable one! We’re going back through the iPhone rumors we were speculating about back in June to either confirm or clarify what’s what. If you missed the keynote, keep reading to find out more about the all new iPhone lineup.
Four phones, similar naming as last year
Rumor
After the big shift from numerals back to numbers last year, the 2020 iPhones are expected to follow similar naming. We don’t think there will be any surprises here, so we’re expecting these names:
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 Max
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
Reality
We were 3 for 4 on this one. In the end the names for this years iPhones are: iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and iPhone Mini (we missed this one!). The iPhone 12 mini won't be available until November 13 and, as you can guess, it's smaller in size.
Smaller size
Rumor
According to many rumors that are circulating, the iPhone’s Pro size may be reduced from 5.8 inches, which we saw in last year’s version, to 5.4 inches.
Expected sizing is as follows:
- iPhone 12 - 5.4 inches
- iPhone 12 Max - 6.1 inches
- iPhone 12 Pro - 6.1 inches
- iPhone 12 Pro Max - 6.7 inches
Reality
- iPhone 12 mini - 5.4 inches
- iPhone 12 - 6.1 inches
- iPhone 12 Pro - 6.1 inches
- iPhone 12 Pro Max - 6.7 inches
When you adjust for the name change in the iPhone mini, we actually got this one right!
Revisiting designs of iPhones past
Rumor
Sites like Phone Arena have released iPhone 12 renders that suggest the design is moving away from the rounded corners we’ve seen since the iPhone 6. In their place, the flatter edges reminiscent of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 may be coming back.
Reality
The less rounded corners we predicted did in fact make their way into the iPhone 12 design. One thing Apple clarified is that while the phone may look similar to previous iphones in design, the new technology used on the 12s make them a lot more durable.
Camera upgrades
Rumor
Upcoming iPhone 12 models are expected to include tweaks that mean better image capture for owners. This includes an update on the TrueDepth camera and other sensors. For the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max, expect a triple-lens camera stack, a LiDAR sensor (seen on the new iPad Pro), and an updated design.
Reality
iPhone 12 Pro models enjoy a new image signal processor that Apple says will drive increased image quality and powerful computational photography capabilities. The LiDAR scanner did make it way into the Pro models as well. The new Wide cameras allow for improved performance in low-light settings. They also will feature the new Apple ProRAW, which gives users more creative control when editing.
5G capabilities
Rumor
The 2020 iPhones are expected to have support for 5G built-in. The next generation in cellular technology is here – almost. For the moment, 5G is only available in a select list of cities, but its availability will become more widespread as time goes on.
Reality
This rumor is now a reality. All 2020 iPhones are 5G -ready.
No more EarPods
Rumor
Alright, according to an Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo, Apple won’t be including the clean, new pair of EarPods we’re all used to getting with each new iPhone purchase. Instead, the company is expected to push the purchase of AirPods with a promotion.
Reality
This wasn't a surprise to many, but if you weren't expecting it, you're probably not too happy about it. Apple confirmed that EarPods and a charger will not be included with the iPhone 12. They cited their efforts in sustainability and desire to prevent accessories from ending up in landfills as the reason.
What else we found out at the 2020 Apple keynote
New iPhones will be dropping next month. While we didn’t report on this one, there was a lot of speculation that this would be the case. Coronavirus stopped everyone in their tracks. This was also true for huge companies like Apple, whose supply chains experienced a big setback when factories closed to slow down spread of the virus. Apple announced that the iPhone 12 2020 iPhones will be available on XXXXXXX.
