Adhesive earns its place on a rental or a hull you may not drill. 3M publishes numbers for VHB 5952 worth following exactly: clean with a 70/30 isopropyl alcohol and water mix, apply roughly 15 psi, work at an ideal 70 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit, and expect half strength at 20 minutes and full strength at 72 hours.
A chartered pontoon, 52 degree spring morning. The renter wipes the console with a rag, sticks the base down and gets underway ten minutes later. It lets go before lunch. The surface sat below 3M's suggested 50 to 60 degree minimum, and the bond had half its strength when the slamming started. Sticking it down the night before in a warm cabin changes everything. 316 is more resistant, not immune, and marine grade is a nickname rather than a certification anybody audits. The bolt shipped with your phone mount for cars carries no grade stamp, which tells you what you need to know, and a car mount for mobile phone has no reason to buy molybdenum.

- After the first two outings, re-check clamp torque and every set screw. Shock backs fasteners out early or not at all.
- Monthly in season, look for rust weeping from under washers. That's crevice corrosion announcing itself.
- Annually, replace fasteners showing pitting and inspect polymer parts for chalking and hairline cracks.
