What Ceramic Shield Actually Is, In Materials Terms

Apple's own description remains the clearest anybody has written, in the iPhone 12 announcement on 13 October 2020: the cover moves past ordinary glass by way of a new high temperature crystallization step that, in Apple's words, "grows nano-ceramic crystals within the glass matrix." Nothing is glued on or sprayed. Crystals get grown in place, inside hot glass.

The material has a category name. The American Ceramic Society defines a glass-ceramic as "a hybrid material that features nanoceramic crystals embedded within a glass matrix" and adds the part consumer coverage drops: glass-ceramics are tougher than glass, but crystals have traditionally wrecked transparency. Apple and Corning had to pick crystal type and degree of crystallinity to get toughness and a screen you can see through. Crystallization is half the story. The formed sheet then gets chemically strengthened, which keeps a cover barely half a millimetre thick from behaving like window glass. Corning's account: the part goes into "a molten salt solution" where potassium ions migrate out of that solution and into the glass surface, displacing "the smaller sodium ions." On cooling, "the larger potassium ions compress the glass together, creating a compressive stress layer that forms a tough surface."

Corning states the consequence plainly: the glass "retains more of its strength even after a minor nick or scratch." Compression has to be cancelled out before a surface flaw can open and run.

Glass almost never fails from the middle. It fails from a surface flaw opening under tension, so permanent compression means every new scratch begins life fighting a headwind.

Somebody pre-ordering wants to know whether the new phone survives a fall better than the one in their hand. Nobody outside Apple knows yet, and anyone shopping accessories for the iPhone 18 is buying against an announcement rather than evidence.

Toughness And Hardness Are Two Different Properties
