How the Reactor Series Prioritizes Safety and Reliability

In our previous Reactor Series post, we highlighted our approach to designing the best products possible for our newest series. Now we are delving deep into the safety and reliability mechanisms put in place for the next product available in the Reactor Series--the Portable Wireless Charging Pack.

Multi-level safety protections

When purchasing an external charging device, checking that it’s been tested and equipped with crucial safety features is often understated. In reality, a number of tests and certifications should be done by manufacturers to ensure the safety of their batteries. The Reactor Charging Pack achieves and surpasses these safety checks on several fronts.

There are three critical components used in making a power bank: the battery cell, the protection circuit module (PCM), and power management system.

1. The battery cell

The multi-level safety approach for the Reactor Series starts by choosing stable and reliable cell chemistry. Once battery chemistry is chosen, the battery cell goes through an array of performance and stress tests. Each single cell is tested. During manufacturing, we exert multiple charge and discharge cycles to ensure cells are performing within safe parameters.

2. The protection circuit module (PCM)

The PCM is then installed on the battery cell to create the battery pack, the PCM is designed to ensure battery can be isolated from the overall system to ensure maximum product safety and protection. The PCM protection logic continuously monitor variations in battery voltage, current and impedance. This ensures that the battery is protected against extreme voltage, current and temperature variations.

3. The power management system

The battery pack is then connected to the power management system. The power management system is responsible for charging and discharging the battery cells. The power management system is chosen and tested to have charge and discharge efficiency. The higher the efficiency of the power management system in any power bank the lower the losses in the electrical path the safer the product. The power management system is designed to ensure maximum efficiencies in both charge and discharge paths to maintain the highest level of product and battery safety.

Protection against power failure

The Reactor Series comes equipped with proper safety circuit to mitigate any power failure that could occur during charging. Many power banks currently on the market only have one safety circuit in place for the entire system. The Reactor Portable Wireless Charging Pack has independent protections in place for each input/output port and safeguards against hazards using a multi-level approach.

Take the micro-USB port--used to charge up the power bank itself--for example. The Charging Pack has a dedicated battery protection circuit that ensures the power bank does not overcharge. Overcharging can damage the battery by overheating, which can then become a fire hazard. The protection circuit stops sending a charge to the power bank once it has reach capacity, which ensures robust and safe performance throughout the life of the power bank.

Another port, the USB-A, has a safety circuit built specifically to monitor the state of charge of the end device. If it senses any variations in the charging profile, the charge will be automatically terminated. This minimizes any damage to the device you’re charging.

Why battery protection circuits are so important

Battery in its essence is an energy storing device. Battery cells are designed to store energy (store the charge) or release energy (discharge energy stored). Batteries with poor chemicals create instable charging/discharging profiles, which can cause excessive stress and damage to the battery cells. This is both a safety hazard and a fire hazard. With the Reactor Charging Pack’s multi-level protection and premium components, the battery cell only operates within normal limits, and makes sure the battery does not exceed overcharging or undercharging conditions. This makes the product one of the safest in its category.

I’m really missing using my rokform cases, no individuality or coolness with my current case. I’m using a mophie juice pak case with wirelessly charging capabilities for my iPhone 8 Plus, will rokform be adding this to their product line?
