Samsung Galaxy S21: All the Details About the Upcoming Release
We’ve been looking forward to Samsung’s annual keynote, Unpacked 2021, for months now. Now that it’s over, we can tell you that it did not disappoint. During the event, the company introduced the Galaxy 21 smartphone series. Here’s what we know.
Samsung introduces more affordable starting prices
If you want to get your hands on Samsung’s latest and greatest Galaxy lineup, here’s what it will cost you (starting price):
- Galaxy S21- starts at $799
- Galaxy S21 Plus - starts at $999
- Galaxy S21 Ultra - starts at $1199
For those who have been paying attention, the starting price for the S21 and S21 Plus is a whopping $200 less than last year’s comparable models. How was Samsung able to bring the prices? The company made a few key strategic changes. In the S21 models, starting RAM size has decreased from 12GB to 8GB. Resolution quality also decreased on flat panel screens. Another cost cutting and, according to Samsung, sustainability-driven change? Samsung followed Apple in choosing to no longer include a charging block or headphones in the box.
Key Upgrades
Both phones include a few key upgrades, including Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 888 processor and 5G integration.
Same display sizes
The display sizes will remain unchanged from series past, with the Galaxy S21 screen measuring 6.2 inches and the Galaxy S21 Plus measuring 6.7 inches. They are also compatible with sub-6 5G and mmWave.
Colors
The S21 lineup is available in a mix of metallic-like colors.
- Galaxy S21 - Phantom violet, Phantom gray, Phantom pink, Phantom white
- Galaxy S21 Plus - Phantom violet, Phantom silver, Phantom black, Phantom gold*, Phantom red*
- Galaxy S21 Ultra - Phantom black, Phantom silver, Phantom brown*, Phantom navy*, Phantom titanium*
*These colorways are available exclusively on Samsung's website (no additional price).
More seamless design
The S21’s design isn’t drastically different from its predecessor, but what it lacks in innovation it makes up for in durability. One of the biggest complaints of the S20 lineup was the bulkiness of the rear phone cameras, which stuck out not only as an eyesore but as a magnet for any bumps or scuffs. In the new design, the cameras are better integrated into the rest of the body’s design, which makes the camera bumps less obtrusive.
Galaxy S21 Ultra
With the S21 Ultra, Samsung hopes to help its customers achieve ‘Everyday Epic.’ From their own press release, “Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra: The Ultimate Smartphone Experience, Designed To Be Epic In Every Way”, Samsung President explains just that:
“Galaxy S21 Ultra is another example of how Samsung is driving meaningful innovation forward to give people personalized experiences that enrich their lives and empower them to express who they are,” said TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics. “Given how indispensable technology has been to our lives during these times, we wanted to take another leap forward and push the boundaries of what a smartphone can do.”
The S21 Ultra pricing starts at $1,199 and is touted as having both Samsung’s most advanced and intelligent pro-grade camera system and being the best Galaxy performance ever.
Key Specs:
- 6.8 inch display
- 12 GB RAM
- 512 GB storage
- S-Pen compatible (not included, must be purchased separately)
Samsung's Galaxy S21 Ultra has four cameras on the back -- wide angle, ultrawide, 3X telephoto and 10X telephoto. The wide angle camera uses pixel binning technology. The ultra-wide lens is packed with a 108-megapixel wide-angle lens. Where last year’s model had a 48-megapixel telephoto lens, the S21 as two 1--megapixel telephoto lenses.
