That gives the iPhone Duo a fast-growing category to enter, but it also creates a protection problem a standard phone doesn’t have. You’re protecting two panels, a moving hinge, and a folding inner display, not just a single glass slab. IDC’s 2026 smartphone forecast supports the 12.6% growth figure.
A foldable iPhone case has to do more than cover the back and corners. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, and its inner display uses a polymer cover layer rather than Ceramic Shield. Apple also hasn’t published repair pricing for the inner display, hinge, or out-of-warranty service, so it’s worth thinking about protection before the phone takes its first hit.
We ranked these foldable iPhone cases by how clearly each brand explains its protection, not by whichever one throws out the biggest drop-test number. Brands measure and report drop protection in different ways. A multiplier without a baseline doesn’t tell you the actual drop height. A height claim without a test standard or impact surface still leaves important questions unanswered.

Complete drop details matter because a multiplier without a baseline cannot be checked. Hinge coverage matters because foldables have one more exposed moving part.
iFixit found that dust exposure made a Galaxy Z Fold8 hinge grind and stop opening normally. It gave that phone a 4 out of 10 repairability score. That is a different device, but it shows why hinge protection matters.
We scored our case with the same rules. We gave ourselves 3 out of 5 for thickness and 3 out of 5 for value. It is rugged, thick, $89.99, and black only.
Why Drop Height Alone Does Not Work Here
OtterBox claims 4X tested to MIL-STD 810G-516.6. It does not publish the baseline height or impact surface. Do not convert that claim into feet.
UAG names MIL-STD 810G-516.6 but gives no height or surface. TORRAS claims 8-foot drop protection but gives no standard or surface. Spigen, dbrand, ESR, PITAKA, Mous, Nomad, Thinborne, and Apple publish no measurable drop spec.
Why the Hinge Decides Everything
Some cases use a moving hinge cover. Others use a flexible TPU or PU bridge. Moving covers add bulk. Flexible bridges can feel lighter.
Soft materials can deform under heat and pressure over time. That can create pressure at the fold line. Thin cases often skip the hinge for this reason.
Our case runs reinforced polycarbonate across the fold line. Spigen prioritizes hinge coverage. PITAKA clearly does not. Its product is called the Suite Case Without Hinge. Apple, dbrand, ESR, and Thinborne do not clearly state hinge coverage.
The Thickness Problem Nobody Mentions
A foldable phone case adds material to both panels. You feel that added thickness twice when the phone closes.
A 2 mm shell adds material to both sides. That can add roughly 4 mm to the folded stack. The iPhone Duo measures 11.3 mm thick when folded. An extra 4 mm is about a 35% increase in closed thickness.
OtterBox lists its separate Lumen Series for Duo at 0.46 inches, or 11.75 mm, thick. That case alone measures more than the Duo’s 11.3 mm folded depth.
We don’t hide this tradeoff. Our rugged foldable iPhone case adds bulk, which is why we scored it 3 out of 5 for thickness. Thinborne is the lighter option. It measures 0.90 mm thick, but it doesn’t publish a drop rating.

Nomad’s $59 Mag Leather Back makes the limit clear. Nomad says it “doesn't protect against drops.” It may work if you want leather and magnetic attachment. It isn’t a protection-first case.

Does the iPhone Duo need a case?
Yes. The outer display uses Ceramic Shield 2, and the back uses Ceramic Shield. The folding inner display doesn’t. It uses a polymer cover layer over high-strength glass instead. Apple hasn’t published a screen repair price, hinge repair price, or out-of-warranty service price for the Duo. YouGov found that 68% of U.S. adults use a phone cover.
Do foldable iPhone cases cover the hinge?

How much thicker does a case make the iPhone Duo?
A foldable phone case adds material to both sides of the Duo. A 2 mm shell can add roughly 4 mm to the folded stack. That’s about a 35% increase over the iPhone Duo’s 11.3 mm folded depth. OtterBox lists its separate Lumen Series for Duo at 11.75 mm thick. Thinborne lists its iPhone Duo case at 0.90 mm thick, but it doesn’t publish a drop rating.
