Rokform Rugged Cases guard the hardware, not the software.

You are probably here because something went wrong. A notification summary butchered a message you cared about, or the storage warning returned days after you deleted half your podcasts. Seventy-one percent of Americans say AI will make personal information less secure, against 3 percent who say more secure, according to Pew Research Center's 2026 survey of 5,119 U.S. adults. Plenty of people want the phone and not the assistant.

How to turn off Apple Intelligence properly is smaller than the internet makes it sound and bigger than most guides admit. One master switch, a dozen smaller ones, and a few that keep running after the big one. Apple Intelligence is one room in a bigger house, and our guide to remove AI from your phone covers the rest.

TL;DR

  • Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri holds the master toggle, and Apple states that turning it off removes the on-device models.
  • Apple lists 7 GB of storage as a requirement, so this is the only supported way to reclaim it.
  • Notification summaries, Mail previews and Mail categories each have their own control, and two of the three survive the master toggle.
  • The ChatGPT extension is a separate switch that does not vanish with everything else.
  • Screen Time blocks Writing Tools, image creation and Intelligence Extensions. Managed fleets get a longer list.
  • How to turn off Apple Intelligence is a toggle plus a habit, and when you turn off AI on iPhone the habit is the part that sticks.

The Master Toggle and What It Actually Removes

For most people, how to turn off Apple Intelligence ends here. Apple keeps every generative feature behind one gate, and what surprises people is that the software leaves the phone. For the fast version of how to turn off AI on iPhone, that walkthrough covers it.

Where the switch lives in iOS 26

Open Settings, tap Apple Intelligence & Siri, then tap the button beside Apple Intelligence. Apple documents two variants of this screen depending on your iOS version. One tap and it is off. That is how to turn off Apple ai on iPhone at the top level.

Siri itself stays, which catches people out. Only the generative extras disappear.

The storage you get back

Apple's requirements page states the feature needs 7 GB of storage on device, and that "if you turn off Apple Intelligence, the on-device models will be removed from your device." Apple publishes 7 GB as a requirement rather than a guaranteed reclaim figure, so treat it as a ceiling and check Settings > General > iPhone Storage before and after.

Picture a 128 GB iPhone 16 at 12 GB free, where the owner already deleted offline maps and every podcast. Switching it off returns the space the models held, and the update that kept failing installs. If 128 GB was always tight, our breakdown of which iPhone holds the most storage is worth reading before your next upgrade.

Which iPhones even have this setting

Apple lists the hardware plainly: iPhone 15 Pro models, and iPhone 16 or later, on iOS 18.1 or later. Older than that and there is nothing to disable. Skip to the section on Google's tools.

Turning Off One Feature at a Time

How to turn off Apple ai on iPhone feature by feature is thinner than readers expect. Apple built standalone switches for a few features and routed the rest through the master gate.

Feature Standalone switch? Where it lives What removes it
Notification summaries Yes Settings > Notifications > Summarize Notifications Its own toggle
Mail summary previews Yes Settings > Apps > Mail > Summarize Message Previews Its own toggle
Mail categories Yes, but not an AI feature Mail inbox menu > List View Its own view setting
Writing Tools No Appears on selected text Master toggle or Screen Time
Image Playground, Genmoji, Image Wand No Apps and keyboard Master toggle or Screen Time
Clean Up No Photos edit tools Master toggle
Safari page summaries No Safari page menu Master toggle or device management
ChatGPT extension Yes Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT Its own toggle or Screen Time

Diagram of four iPhone AI control layers

Not every feature deserves the axe, and our roundup of AI productivity tools worth keeping makes that case. Knowing how to turn off Apple Intelligence selectively beats nuking it.

Notification summaries and priority notifications

Two controls sit side by side and get confused constantly. Settings > Notifications > Summarize Notifications kills it, or tap Choose Notifications to Summarize and pick app by app. Apple documents both paths. Prioritize Notifications is separate, reordering alerts rather than rewriting.

A twelve-message family thread about a hospital visit gets condensed into one line that reads far worse than the conversation was. That is when people go looking for how to turn off ai summary on iPhone, and the surgical answer wins. Untick Messages under Choose Notifications to Summarize, leave newsletters and delivery apps summarised, and keep the compression without the version that scares you.

The Lock Screen is faster still: swipe left on a priority notification, tap Options, then Turn Off Prioritization. Anyone searching how to turn off ai summary on iPhone should start there.

Writing Tools, Image Playground and Clean Up

None of these three has a standalone off switch. Writing Tools appears wherever you select text, Clean Up lives in the Photos editing tools, Image Playground is an app.

The master toggle and Screen Time restrictions are your only supported routes. Anyone promising a hidden switch for Writing Tools is guessing.

Safari page summaries

Safari summaries come from the page menu, and Apple's Safari documentation lists no standalone toggle. The master switch removes it; on a managed device, Allow Safari summary is the only granular route.

Mail summaries are not Mail categories

Your inbox still sorts itself into four tabs after you disable everything. Summarize Message Previews is an Apple Intelligence feature with its own switch at Settings > Apps > Mail. Categories, meaning Primary, Transactions, Updates and Promotions, are a Mail feature Apple documents separately, switched off by opening an inbox, tapping the menu at the top and choosing List View. Miss that and you will spend an afternoon convinced the switch failed.

The ChatGPT Extension Is Its Own Switch

This layer has a third party on the other end, and people forget it exists. Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri, tap ChatGPT, turn off Use ChatGPT. Apple adds a second step most guides skip: to stop Siri suggesting ChatGPT at all, turn off ChatGPT and then Setup Prompts. A Confirm ChatGPT Requests toggle governs whether Siri asks first.

Apple's data-handling documentation beats the rumours for specifics. Your IP address is obscured from ChatGPT, your general location is passed for fraud prevention, and without an account OpenAI "must not use your request to improve or train its models." A contractual commitment, not an audit.

Working out how to turn off Apple Intelligence and leaving this extension live is the most common half-finished job here, so treat how to turn off Apple ai on iPhone as two switches. Weighing which assistant earns the space? We put Claude AI against ChatGPT.

What Stops Working the Moment You Switch It Off

Nobody should answer how to turn off Apple Intelligence without reading this. Out goes Live Translation in Messages, Phone, FaceTime and AirPods, plus Clean Up, Genmoji, Image Playground, Image Wand, Writing Tools, the Siri enhancements including typing to Siri, natural-language photo search, memory movies, Mail Smart Reply and call summaries.

A SellCell survey of more than 2,000 U.S. smartphone owners, including over 1,000 iPhone users on AI-capable models, found 73 percent said the features add little to no value. Vendor study, late 2024. Live translation through earbuds goes too, so if that was why you bought earbuds built for running, weigh it before you turn off AI on iPhone for good.

The ones people miss the most

Two features bring people back: natural-language photo search, and Clean Up. Four questions decide if they are yours. In the last month, did you use Clean Up on a photo you shared? Have you searched Photos with a sentence rather than a name? Do you read the notification summaries, or open the app anyway? Has Writing Tools changed a message that mattered? Two or more no answers and the master toggle is right. Two or more yes and the individual switches win, which is where most people land. We argued both sides of whether Apple Intelligence is worth it, and the answer came down to which two features a person touches.

Locking It Down for Someone Else

A toggle a kid can flip back in two taps is not a control. This is the part of how to turn off Apple Intelligence that survives someone who does not want it off, and the honest answer to how to turn off Apple ai on iPhone when the iPhone is not yours.

Screen Time for a child's iPhone

Screen Time gives restrictions rather than toggles, and a restriction sits behind the passcode. When iOS 26.1 shipped on 3 November 2025, MacRumors reported it switched Communication Safety and Web content filters on by default for existing child accounts aged 13 to 17. Apple does change settings on accounts that already exist.

Two phones on a desk with padlock

The three restrictions, exactly as Apple names them

Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, switch that on, then tap Intelligence & Siri. Skip the first switch and the section stays greyed out. Inside are three controls set to Allow or Don't Allow: Writing Tools, Image Creation, covering Image Playground, Genmoji and Image Wand, and Intelligence Extensions, covering ChatGPT and similar. Apple spells all three out.

Restrictions for managed fleets

Supervised devices expose a longer list. Apple's deployment documentation names Allow writing tools, Allow Image Playground, Allow Genmoji, Allow Image Wand and Allow external intelligence integrations, the last covering cloud services with Siri including ChatGPT and Google Lens. Others force providers into anonymous mode, or switch off Mail summary, Mail smart replies and Safari summary.

A small clinic running 40 staff phones needs patient email handled without a blanket ban. The admin leaves the master feature alone and sets three restrictions: Allow Mail summary, Allow Mail smart replies and Allow external intelligence integrations. Staff keep dictation and Live Translation, and no summariser touches a patient message.

Route Who it is for What it covers Can the user undo it?
Master toggle Your own iPhone Every Apple Intelligence feature at once Yes, in two taps
Per-feature switches Your own iPhone Notification summaries, Mail previews, ChatGPT Yes, in two taps
Screen Time restrictions A child's or a shared iPhone Writing Tools, Image Creation, Intelligence Extensions Only with the Screen Time passcode
Device management Managed and supervised fleets The above plus Mail, Safari, Notes and handwriting No

Why Your Settings Do Not Stay Where You Left Them

9to5Mac reported in January 2025 that Apple's own iOS 18.3 release notes said the feature would be enabled automatically during onboarding for users new or upgrading, and that disabling it meant returning to the Apple Intelligence & Siri pane. An upgrade path turned it on.

The claim is narrower than the panic. 9to5Mac noted it was unclear what happened to people who had already opted out, and nobody has since documented iOS reversing an explicit choice. Apple is not flipping your switch. Defaults change across releases, and onboarding with them. That same Pew survey of 5,119 U.S. adults, fielded February 2026, found 63 percent say AI is advancing too quickly, and pace is the problem. Features arrive faster than anyone rechecks settings. Treating how to turn off Apple Intelligence as a one-time job is the mistake.

A five-minute post-update audit

How to turn off Apple Intelligence and keep it off, after every major iOS release. One, Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri, confirm the master toggle. Two, same screen under Extensions, ChatGPT and Setup Prompts. Three, Settings > Notifications > Summarize Notifications. Four, Prioritize Notifications. Five, Settings > Apps > Mail > Summarize Message Previews. Six, Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Intelligence & Siri. Seven, Settings > General > iPhone Storage, confirming the models stayed gone.

Seven screens, five minutes, twice a year.

Switches People Confuse With Apple's AI

People land on AI guides with completely different questions. Three come up constantly.

Low Power Mode is a battery setting

The path differs by model. iPhone 14 or earlier: Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode. iPhone 15 or later: Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Low Power Mode. Apple's Power Modes documentation covers both, so if you searched how to turn off low power mode on iPhone and the menu did not match, that is why. It also switches off at 80 percent charge, answering how to turn off low power mode on iPhone for anyone who plugged in and waited.

Phone charging on a nightstand at dusk

Adaptive Power does involve on-device intelligence. On iPhone 15 Pro or later it predicts heavy days, lowers brightness, limits background activity and can trigger Low Power Mode at 20 percent. It ships on by default on iPhone 17, 17 Pro, 17 Pro Max and iPhone Air. Disable it at Settings > Battery > Power Mode > Adaptive Power, a separate question from how to turn off low power mode on iPhone.

Satellite features are a connectivity fallback

Messages via satellite is not a background service humming in your pocket. It activates only when you are outside cellular and Wi-Fi coverage and tap Use Messages via Satellite on the alert. Apple documents it as available in the U.S., Canada and Japan on iOS 18 or later, Mexico on iOS 18.4, free for two years after activation.

Ask how to turn off satellite on iPhone and the honest answer is that no always-on switch exists, because no always-on service does. Most people searching how to turn off satellite on iPhone saw the demo at Settings > Apps > Messages > Satellite Connection Demo and assumed a radio was running. How to turn off satellite on iPhone really means understanding that it runs on demand. For everything else you can do on a phone without service or WiFi, we wrote a longer piece.

Google's AI is a different company's switch

Google states that AI Overviews "are a core Google Search feature" and that these "features cannot be turned off." What Google offers instead, in the same documentation, is a Web filter you select after a search, which "displays only text-based links without features like AI Overviews."

No iOS setting reaches it. Anyone searching how to turn off google ai on iPhone is asking about a product Apple does not ship, so how to turn off google ai on iPhone is answered inside Google's apps, or by changing your Safari search engine.

A Cleaner Phone Still Needs Protection

All of this is you taking deliberate control of a device that keeps deciding for you. Settings only reach the software, and the thing you spent twenty minutes tuning is a slab of glass and metal living on truck dashboards and bike bars. No toggle helps.

Depending on the model you get machined aluminium and reinforced polycarbonate, a MAGMAX magnet array that handles magnetic mounting, and a RokLock twist lock keyed to the Rokform mount system so the phone stays put when the road does not. Rokform rugged cases are sold per phone model, MagSafe compatible options included.

Final Thoughts

The toggle is the easy bit. Settings, Apple Intelligence & Siri, one tap, models gone, storage back. The discipline is the follow-through: the ChatGPT extension on its own, the Mail categories that were never part of this, and seven screens worth rechecking.

Decide per feature rather than per philosophy. That is my recommendation for most people. If Clean Up earns its keep and the summaries do not, you have the switches to say so. If none of it does, you have one switch and 7 GB waiting. Write the audit into your calendar, because the settings you choose today are only the settings you have until the next update.
