Survival Series: Save a life, don’t text and drive

Today’s installment of our Survival Series reminds us how important it is to always stay focused on the road ahead of us.

The stories we share as part of our Survival Series are a mix of hilarious and sometimes unbelievable saves, like the G-ROK speaker story that survived speeds of 90+ mph on the freeway, but also of harrowing situations. Today’s survival story reminds us how important it is to always stay focused on the road ahead of us.

The Survival Story

Robert, a Rokform customer that rides a 2018 Harley Davidson Iron 883, wrote in to tell us about his true survival story, which goes beyond one saved smartphone. In Robert’s survival story, he thankfully was able to walk away with his life.

Hello my name is Robert and I have a Rokform phone case and handlebar mount on my 2018 Harley Davidson Iron 883.

I'm writing to you so that other people can hear/see the dark side of texting and driving. I was commuting to a meeting on July 15th 2020, and a driver texting and driving ran up on me and smashed the right rear of the motorcycle. At that point I had said "oh s**t" and I was ejected off the motorcycle. The motorcycle and I slid about 15' before coming to a complete stop. I was fully geared so no major injuries. My left knee took the initial impact, and then I slid and rolled simultaneously. $4,000 of damage was done to the Harley, but that's nothing compared to a life. All in all, I'm alive and I have my family that I was able to go home to.

My phone was on my Rokform handlebar mount when the accident occured and it didn't move at all! Great product Rokform.

The Takeaway

This story is not so much about highlighting Rokform quality as it is about bringing awareness to the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of motorcycle safety. We are so grateful to hear that Robert survived this scary accident thanks in some part to the gear that protected him. Thanks Robert for sharing your story!

The Gear

Rokform Survival Series: Save a life, don’t text and drive

Robert was using two Rokform products that day – a motorcycle handlebar mount and a mount-compatible smartphone case. The specifics of his smartphone case are unknown, but it could’ve been any of the three Rokform series with RokLock twist lock system built in, Rugged, Crystal, or Fuzion Pro

Rokform carries four different motorcycle mounts, but the Handlebar Mount has been around the longest. It’s built to work with motorcycle cruisers, like the Harley Davidson Iron 883 Robert owns. In addition to Harleys, the Handlebar Mount is compatible with Metric and Indian cruisers.

One of the biggest advantages of the Handlebar Mount is its versatility – it fits a range of handlebar sizes up to 1 ¼ inch (details below). Once you find the right spot for it on your handlebar, you can adjust the viewing angle several different ways: -20 degrees to 55 degrees of pivot angle, 360-degree mount rotation (most commonly positioned between 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock), and 360-degree rotation around the handlebar itself.

  • CNC machined 6061 T6 aircraft grade aluminum
  • Dual retention locking system
  • Tilted viewing angle
  • Versatile fit - Fits any bar between 7/8” - 1-1/4“ (22.2mm-31.75mm)
  • Choose from black or polished aluminum

As you can tell from Robert’s story, once your phone is locked into place with RokLock and magnet technology, it will stay there.
