New Year's Day is right around the corner and while we we’re all busy preparing for the holiday hustle and bustle, lawmakers around the country were busy passing bills that become laws that will eventually have an effect on us all. For us in California, there are several new traffic and road-related laws that will have influence on our daily lives. If you’re one of our motorcycle-riding friends, you’ll be pumped that lane splitting was officially legalized in California. But our automobile driving friends might not like this particular new law.

As a part of Assembly Bill 1785, a new law will be enforced regarding HOW you use your cellphone while driving. We already knew that talking and texting on a cellphone while driving has been illegal for a while now, but this new bill closes the loopholes about using apps such as music or maps.

The law directly states:

A person shall not drive a motor vehicle while holding and operating a handheld wireless telephone or an electronic wireless communications device unless the wireless telephone or electronic wireless communications device is specifically designed and configured to allow voice-operated and hands-free operation, and it is used in that manner while driving. (emphasis added)

While most of us might think of this as a bit much, distracted driving has become quite an issue in some of the more traffic-heavy areas of the state. The Sacramento Bee states its city’s distracted drivers are at “dangerous levels” which likely contributed to an approval of a law of this magnitude. And if you don’t live in Cali, it could just be a matter of time before other state lawmakers jump on the bandwagon.

So what’s a girl to do when she relies solely on her phone’s GPS to get from one coffee shop to the next? Don’t throw in the towel just yet, thanks to Rokform.
