Diving into the Droid Market: Top 7 Apps

At last count, there were more than 675,000 apps available in the Android market place. Our team has scoured the Internet to find the most popular and up-and-coming. Read our list, and let us know what your favorite Droid apps are in the comment section below.

  1. Dolphin (free). Not only is this power browser super fast, it allows you to add tabs just like desktop browsers! You can even customize whether the new tab opens in the background or foreground. Great feature.
  2. AppGarden Lite (free). This app contains many different utilities. It’s sort of the Swiss Army knife of apps. A QR code scanner, password generator, stopwatch, Urban Dictionary lookup, tip calculator, and calorie calculator are just some of the useful tools included.
  3. Tasker (6.49). The tagline for Tasker is, “Turn your smartphone into a genius-phone.” It does just that. You can program it to perform custom actions that will save you time and effort. For example, automatically turning on your music when you plug in your headphones! Geniusphone, indeed.
  4. Pocket (free). You know when someone you follow on Twitter tweets an article that you really want to read, but you don’t have time to read it right then and there? Well, this app saves the web pages and videos for you to read later. You can even read them offline.
  5. Gibberbot (free). Worried that someone could tap into your network and read all your texts and chats? Gibberbot will make your data look like gibberish to any would-be hacker. It offers fully encrypted chatting over Jabber, Facebook, and Gchat.
  6. Gurk, the 8-bit RPG (free). With all this talk of sleek, useful, fast-moving technology, you may want a little bit of retro comfort. If so, you’ll love this RPG. The graphics will remind you of your childhood, and with basically no narrative, you won’t be distracted from all the old-school bleeps and bloops. Basically, it will make you feel 11 again.
  7. Google Goggles (free). This app is like something straight out of a sci-fi movie. It layers information from the digital world onto the “real” world. Use your phone’s camera to take a picture of something (a painting, a sign written in another language), and it will share interesting facts from the Internet with you. Great for travel!

Which app is missing from this list? Leave us a note and we’ll share the best ones on an upcoming blog.
